Support Center for Child Advocates has nominated former foster children to
The Client Advisory Board (CAB). These courageous adults
work to build awareness of serious, on-going problems in the foster care
system. CAB’s ambitious mission is to not allow another child to suffer
in foster care as they did. To this end they share their stories and train
attorneys and social workers to be better advocates.
Their October 2004 testimony before a legislative taskforce in Harrisburg
resulted in introduction of House Bill 302, a “Bill of Rights” for those in
foster care, by Representative Phyllis Mundy. “I was horrified by what I
heard,” she says. “They relayed stories of abuse, molestation, denied
medical care, and malnourishment. These are society’s most vulnerable
children, and we must do all that we can to ensure that they are treated
with dignity, respect and kindness.”
The Support Center for Child Advocates is a non-profit organization
providing free legal and social services to abused and neglected children
in Philadelphia. More than 700 needy children were assisted last year.
